Polo is a traditional Chinese sports game known as Ji Ju in ancient times. Polo has a long history in China, as the earliest found written records in history in our country indicated that polo emerged in the Han Dynasty about 2000 years ago and prevailed in the Tang Dynasty but declined gradually in the Qing dynasty. Historical documents of ancient China also has a large number of records about polo, such as Cao Zhi's poem depicts a polo: one who hits the polo balls in succession, and he is riding on the horse so smartly…”; a painting about polo at tomb of prince Zhanghuai in Xi’an of Shaanxi, and the famous painter in Song dynasty Li Gonglin painted the emperor Tangminghuang playing polo, etc. In 1984, when the Chinese Olympic Committee Delegation participated in the 23rd Olympic Games, the precious gifts given to the International Olympic Committee was "the painting of polo in the Tang Dynasty " art tapestries, which showed how our people treasured this traditional culture.
In the 13th century, polo was spread to India and later to Europe. The Silchar, established in 1859 has become the cradle of modern polo, and Sichar Club was also the oldest polo club in the world. The game rules of modern polo were just established according to the rules of this club at that time.
In 1876, James • Bennett • Gordon introduced polo into the United States. In 1878, the first session of polo (Army) championships in the world opened. In 1893, the National Pony Association also was established for promoting polo horse breeding. Since then, polo was spread rapidly to other countries and regions in the world, especially in Commonwealth countries, the United States and Argentina, in which Argentina has become the largest polo horse training country and exporting country.
Internationally, polo is one of the most popolar games among the nobilities. Polo was on the events list in the Olympic games held in 1900, 1908,1920 1924, and 1936. With the break off of the second World War, world economy was faced by depression, hence polo was off the events list. Through this we can see that as a fashionalbe and luxurious sport, polo is also the fruit produced when the national economy has developed to a certain degree.
